Stepping into La Caverna in New York City for my first event photography gig at a Purim party was like entering another world. The venue, with its subterranean charm, was the perfect backdrop for Trybal Gatherings’ unforgettable celebration of tradition and joy. The blend of ancient cave vibes with modern revelry created a dynamic setting that tested my creativity and skills behind the lens.
From the moment the first guests arrived, the energy was palpable. Everyone came dressed to impress in their Purim costumes—from Queen Esther to contemporary mashups that brought the holiday’s spirit of humor and disguise to life. La Caverna’s cavernous walls echoed with the laughter, chatter, and the sound of clinking glasses as guests celebrated the holiday’s triumph over adversity.
Photographing the event meant capturing moments big and small: the spirited singing, the raucous dancing, and, of course, the timeless hora. When the clock struck “foura,” the party was still going strong, and my camera was working overtime to immortalize the joy and camaraderie that filled the cave.
Lighting was one of the biggest challenges. La Caverna’s dim, moody ambiance made for stunning visuals but required me to adapt quickly. I relied on my flash strategically, aiming to preserve the natural atmosphere without overpowering the scene.
This Purim party wasn’t just an event—it was a sensory feast. The costumes were vibrant, the hamantaschen flowed freely, and the energy was infectious. There was an intimacy in the space, amplified by the unique venue, that made every photograph feel personal and meaningful. Whether it was a guest’s beaming smile mid-dance or a quiet moment of reflection during a Purim reading, every shot told a story.
Reflecting on the experience, I’m grateful for the opportunity to document such a lively and meaningful celebration. This gig pushed me out of my comfort zone, teaching me to adapt to challenging environments while staying attuned to the pulse of the event. La Caverna and Trybal Gatherings set the stage for an unforgettable night, and I’m thrilled to have been part of it, camera in hand.
To anyone considering event photography for the first time, especially in unique venues like this, my advice is simple: embrace the chaos, lean into the atmosphere, and don’t forget to enjoy the moment—through the lens and beyond.
