August 14, 2017 was a pretty special day at surf camp in Long Beach.
Carissa Moore came down to the beach and spent the day with us and the kids at camp. She didn’t just stop by for a quick appearance. She got in the water and surfed with the kids, hung out on the beach and spent time talking with them.
There were plenty of selfies along the way, and Carissa took the time to sign the kids’ surfboards. For a bunch of young surfers, getting to paddle out and share waves with a three-time World Champion was something they weren’t going to forget anytime soon.
At the time, Carissa was already one of the biggest names in surfing and a three-time World Champion. But standing on the beach in Long Beach, she was simply there as another surfer, sharing her experience and giving the kids a chance to spend some time with someone they looked up to.
And the day wasn’t over yet.
That evening, Carissa headed into Brooklyn for a 7 PM Hurley Surf Club event at Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg. The marquee outside the theater read:
“Grace Before Greatness”

After a day of surfing with the kids in Long Beach, the setting changed completely. The evening brought together Carissa and the New York surf community for a Hurley Surf Club event focused on her story and career.
Looking back at the photos now, what stands out isn’t just that a world champion came to Long Beach. It’s the little moments: kids getting selfies with Carissa, signed surfboards, sharing waves and then seeing her later that night under the lights in Brooklyn.
One day. Two very different settings. And a pretty memorable visit from one of surfing’s greatest.
