There are some events that I get to capture where, in the moment, I find myself thinking, “How did I get here?”

It was 6 a.m. on a brisk October morning back in 2018, a day that started like no other. I was preparing to photograph an exclusive, invite-only Fabian “Spartacus” Cancellara group ride. The route was unique, starting from New York City, crossing over the iconic George Washington Bridge into New Jersey, riding down the scenic Henry Hudson Drive for a bit.  Then looping back around to stop at Strictly Bicycles in Fort Lee before heading back over the GW Bridge to Central Park. This extraordinary event was organized by my friends (Will Yandell) at CLIF Bar and supported by The Consulate General of Switzerland in New York.

Fabian Cancellara—a name that echoes through the cycling world. A professional road cyclist with an illustrious career, he’s a five-time Tour de France stage winner and an Olympic gold medalist. To say I was excited to be part of this event is an understatement. Capturing such a dynamic experience was a dream gig.

The key to my success that day wasn’t just my photography skills but also my tools. My Sony a9 camera was an obvious choice, with its unparalleled speed and precision, making it perfect for fast-paced action shots. But there was another piece of equipment that truly made the day unique: my Evolve GTR Skateboard. This wasn’t just any accessory; it was my ticket to staying in the mix of the ride, allowing me to glide alongside these elite cyclists and capture shots that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

This type of event is right in my wheelhouse. I’ve honed my ability to follow subjects in motion, whether they’re running, biking, or engaged in any high-energy activity. Being able to anticipate movement and adapt on the fly is a skill I’ve cultivated over the years, and it’s what enables me to capture dynamic, authentic moments that truly tell the story of an event.

As the riders powered through the streets, I navigated my way on my board, blending into the flow of the group ride. The hum of spinning wheels, the crisp morning air, and the golden light of the sunrise set the stage for some truly dynamic images. I was able to capture moments of pure focus, camaraderie, and the sheer intensity of the ride. My skateboard gave me the freedom to move with the riders, positioning myself at angles and vantage points that added a new layer of storytelling to the event.

Looking back, the experience feels surreal. Photographing a legend like Fabian, surrounded by the energy of passionate cyclists, and doing it all while skating alongside them—it’s a memory I’ll cherish forever. It was a perfect fusion of technology, athleticism, and artistry, and it reminded me why I do what I do: to capture fleeting moments that tell a story and inspire others.

So, how did I get here? It’s a mix of preparation, passion, and being open to the unexpected. Sometimes, it’s about having the right tools at the right time. And sometimes, it’s about saying yes to opportunities that push you outside your comfort zone. That October morning, I didn’t just capture an event; I captured a memory that I’ll carry with me for a lifetime.
