Behind the Lens: Brazil’s Electric Fan Fest Before the World Cup Match Against Norway

One of the best parts of covering the FIFA World Cup isn’t always what happens inside the stadium.

Sometimes, the biggest story unfolds hours before kickoff.

Before Brazil faced Norway in the Round of 16, I spent the afternoon photographing the Brazilian pre match celebration at the American Dream Fan Fest in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Long before the first whistle, thousands of supporters had already transformed the plaza into a vibrant celebration of football, culture, and national pride.

The energy was contagious.

Drums echoed throughout the Fan Fest as samba rhythms filled the air. Giant Brazilian flags waved overhead while chants rolled through the crowd. Fans danced, sang, embraced complete strangers, and celebrated every moment leading up to one of the tournament’s biggest matches.

The stoke levels were off the charts.

As someone who has photographed everything from adaptive surfing events to major sporting competitions, I always find myself drawn to these moments before the action begins. There is something special about anticipation. Every painted face, every jersey, every family photo and every flag tells its own story before the match even starts.

The FIFA World Cup has an incredible way of bringing people together, and the American Dream Fan Fest became a perfect example of that. Supporters had traveled from across the United States and around the globe to cheer on Brazil, creating an atmosphere that felt like a small piece of Rio de Janeiro had landed in New Jersey.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was meeting Tomer Savoia, the Brazilian content creator and social media personality whose football content has connected him with millions of fans around the world. Watching him interact with supporters showed just how influential digital creators have become in the global football community.

I also had the opportunity to see Aline Nastari from TNT Sports, who was on location covering the day’s events before kickoff. It’s always great crossing paths with fellow photographers, journalists, and broadcasters who understand that some of the most memorable World Cup stories happen outside the stadium walls.

As kickoff approached, the excitement only continued to build. Every conversation centered around Brazil’s chances of advancing. Every chant grew louder. Every drumbeat seemed to add another layer of excitement.

Then football reminded everyone why it remains the world’s most unpredictable sport.

Norway shocked Brazil with a 2 to 1 victory, ending the five time champions’ World Cup run and sending Norway into the quarterfinals. Within a matter of hours, the emotions surrounding the tournament had shifted dramatically.

Looking back at these photographs, though, the final score almost becomes secondary.

What stands out are the smiles before kickoff. The drummers leading thousands of supporters through traditional chants. The children proudly wearing yellow jerseys. The spontaneous celebrations that broke out across the Fan Fest. Those are the moments that define the experience.

As a photographer, that’s exactly what I hope to preserve.

A sporting event lasts for ninety minutes. The memories surrounding it begin long before the opening whistle and continue long after the final one.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed me into the celebration and allowed me to document such an unforgettable day. The passion of Brazilian football supporters is unlike anything else, and the American Dream Fan Fest proved once again why the FIFA World Cup is as much about people as it is about the game.

I can’t wait to see what the rest of this incredible tournament has in store.
